Evaluation of Final Product
Internet Blues was our Btec DepicT! project. I came up with the original idea, which was then expanded on by the rest of our group. We came along away since the first idea i had about the cooking for life. Below is an evaluation of the film.
Mise-en-Scene
2 Positives
- Costume: The characters had all different costumes and were easy to tell apart.
- Composition: For the most part in the film composition was good, the objects such as computers and sticky notes are easily seen with in certain shots.
2 Negatives
- Character placement: Mostly seen in the beginning shots where one character stands over the others. The character gets in the way and the viewer can only see the backside of that character. This also limits the audience seeing the reaction of the characters as the bad news is being broke to them.
- Lighting: The film starts of dark but then magically gets brighter as it goes on, with no indication of to why that is. An example of this can be seen below.
Camera Work
2 Positives
- The zoom in on the clock: This is shot works, as it looks like its from the point of view from the character, looking at the time move by. The following shot links up with the previous to create a working time-lapse.
- The Following shot when the character walks out of the door: This shot works because its from the point of view of George (The character in the white Adidas T-shirt) and follows the other character walking out the door to go to Josh`s wall. This also ties into the next shot as it shows that the character has moved to a different location.
2 Negatives
- Tripod and camera seen in shot: Amateur error to make here, screen shot can be viewed below, look closely and you will spot the mistake.
- Camera movements could have been smoother: This is particularly noticeable in the shot where the character walks out of the door with the sticky note. The movement is particularly jittery.
Editing
2 Positives
- Time-lapse on the clock (Time moving): This worked well as it emphasis's the passage of time within the world of the film.
- Continuity: This was good in general as we made sure that all the objects seen in frame where not randomly misplaced in the next shot.
2 Negatives
- Too many jump cuts: This made the feel of what was going on very disorientating for the audience as it would just jump to one shot to the next to often
- Shots would go on for too long or were too short: The short shoot can be seen in the part where one character hands the other a piece of paper. The long shot can be seen when the character walks out of the door.
Sound
2 Positives
- Interesting use of soundtrack: For example the music helps change the mood or enhance it. For example the music enhances the mood towards the end, when the characters return to their places defeated, the music seems more somber. However the music can help change the mood as seen in the credits where a character dies, the credits roll and a more uplifting music is heard, the garnered great reviews from the audience.
- Good acting and audible dialogue: For the most part the audio from the characters was clearly heard, this is best seen in the scene where George is annoying the other character about his picture.
2 Negatives
- Dialogue can be hard to hear: In some scenes the speech can not be heard over the ambient sounds. this could have done with a re dub.
- Music doesn't transition well: Someone pointed out when watching the films back in class that the music just cut out suddenly and into a new bit of music.
What we learned/What not to do next time
- I learnt to focus more on editing and making sure that the scenes all fit together, in addition to this i learnt that i should have done are dub over bad audio to enhance it and make the dialogue more audible.
- What not to do next time would be to use less jump cuts and to also make sure that the shots work into the next scenes better so that it makes more sense.
